Joint Use

Policy Contact: Policy Focus:

Lower-income communities grappling with inactivity-related illness like diabetes typically find themselves locked out of school facilities, and have significantly less access to parks and open space than affluent neighborhoods.

Joint use of school and community assets — school playgrounds, pools and ball fields — expands access to and participation in physical activity. Wellcrafted joint use agreements are a roadmap for schools and communities to pool operational and programming resources. Bringing greater cohesion to this statewide movement, regional hubs, toolkits and training can support grassroots leadership, bring projects to scale, and place strategic pressure on decision-makers.
